Hi! I'm John

Hi there! – welcome to the blog home of my food project – here you’ll find my attempts at baking, cooking, photography and writing (and a bit of travel).  Most of which I’m an absolute novice at, but really enjoying doing.

“New Bake City” – is my idea of merging my new experimenting in baking and cooking – and a big part of this is the desire, or promise, to explore new foods, i.e “new bakes” based in the city I love and live in – New York City….and beyond.  I want to explore new foods in New York City and all the places I can manage to travel to.

I was raised in a family that is pretty (very) self-sufficient in the kitchen, all of whom do a really good job of cranking out some impressive stuff that can’t be beat. Also my mom is pretty much a master at baking and entertaining – there’s always a cake on the counter when I come home, as well as multiple dinners planned…and it’s basically been that way for as long as I can remember!  As a result, my sister and I were always pretty comfortable in the kitchen growing up. We had a long history of spending time in the kitchen – usually making some late night treats to feed our sweet tooth- or just helping our parents put a meal together.  So today, and in my adult life – I’ve definitely relied on the kitchen as a place of fun, experimentation and comfort.

I’m currently a licensed architect, living in the aforementioned New York City – thankfully living here has provided endless avenues (and streets) to explore all kinds of foods and cultures. Researching and making food is a true creative outlet for me – one that I’ve decided I want to focus more on. I love discovering the stories behind foods, figuring out why we’re eating what we’re eating – and how it’s different for different people. As well, I just love cooking and baking, no interesting backstory required – just something that was fun to make and take a picture of – expect to see a mix of this here.

My hope is to build out a library of recipes that I’ve tested, tried and photographed, while trying to understand the story behind it.  To all who know me, I have a massive sweet tooth – so while my intent is to not be a blog about desserts…. Don’t be surprised if it trends that way!

Below are some of my favorite / essential bloggers, cooks, photographers, writers that I follow and are inspired by, you should be too:
